In order to provide educational opportunities for individuals interested in ecological economics, the Gund Institute for Ecological Economics is offering the course Ecological Economics as the first step towards the Certificate in Ecological Economics.  This course is designed to guide learners through the theory of ecological economics and develop research and application tools within a problem-based learning (PBL) framework.

Determining How to Use the Course

The Gund Institute has a goal of providing faculty, students, and independent learners access to the Online Ecological Economics Course as a resource from wherever they are located.

Faculty

Faculty from any university are encouraged to use the content (modules, sub-modules, and resources) within this course while teaching their own courses, to use it as a template to build their own ecological economics curricula, or teach directly off this course.

We are attempting to develop this course to the farthest extent possible to make it useful to faculty and students. Any faculty that would like to contribute to the development of this course, please contact Ida Kubiszewski.

Students

The course may be taken in two ways:

  1. University of Vermont course credit: This is for University of Vermont students or anyone that would like to receive course credits.  Course credits are required for anyone who wishes to receive the Certificate for Ecological Economics through the University of Vermont. This option provides full faculty interaction and access to blackboard, however, registration with the University of Vermont and associated fees are required.
  2. Independent learning: This is for anyone which would like to learn about ecological economics but do not require university credits.  It allows for individuals to complete the course at their own pace and is completely free. However, this option does not provide any faculty interaction or access to the blackboard.

The two sites

This course is set up run off two sites, this public site that you are currently on and all the content resides on, and the UVM blackboard site; this is only for registered users.  The blackboard site is where you get the opportunity to interact with the instructors and other students enrolled in the course.  Any assignments or discussions will be handed in through the blackboard site.  The connection between the two sites will be clear as you proceed through the course.

Feel free to go through the content of this course at your own pace.  The blackboard site is only necessary for those that are taking the course for credit.

Whether you register for the course through the University of Vermont or are taking the course independently, begin on this site with the first module.
