Module 1 - Systems Thinking

Course Learning Outcome: Apply systems thinking

Module Outcomes:

  1. Define systems
  2. Conceptualize systems
  3. Compare types of systems

Activities:

  1. Go through the Systems Thinking PDF.
  2. Read the background of System Dynamics.
  3. Use the discussion board to define the following systems:

    • local food production,
    • growth of a forest,
    • social networking,
    • consumer preference,
    • monkey/tiger interaction,
    • voting
    • consumer preference within local food production,
    • monkey/tiger interaction within a growing forest,
    • six degrees of separation experiment.

At this point in time, just concern yourself with making a list of all the things involved in each of these systems. Post your list on the discussion board so you/your classmates can add any missing information.

  4. Practice conceptualizing the systems given in step two by drawing the connections between the parts of each system.
  5. Define and conceptualize your bank account.
  6. Read the information on types of systems (Systems dynamics society and FAQ: Agent-based modeling of complex, adaptive systems) and match each of the systems given in step two to one of the types of systems you just read about. Complete the matching quiz.
  7. Create a chart comparing the characteristics of the types of systems and submit it to your instructor.

  8. Self Check: compare conceptualizations to instructors and classmates.
